Del Mar Highlands Town Center Slated To Be North County’s Hottest
Destination For Dining and Entertainment
Seven New Restaurants, San Diego’s First Luxury Movie Theatre and New Shops Are Welcomed to the Revamped Center

San Diego, CA (May 2011) – Renovations are under way and almost complete at Del Mar Highlands Town Center in Carmel Valley. After a $20 million renovation that began in 2010, the center will re-open over the course of the summer, providing a new upscale neighborhood hub with a range of high-quality dining and entertainment, including seven new restaurants, a luxury movie theatre, a variety of shopping, improved parking and traffic flows and outdoor gathering spaces for seasonal performances and private or community events.

“We’re very excited for the San Diego community to experience the new Del Mar Highlands Town Center,” said Elizabeth Schreiber, Vice President and General Manager for Donahue Schriber, the owner and operator of Del Mar Highlands Town Center. “We anticipate that the caliber of new restaurants and the opening of San Diego’s first luxury moving theatre will help the center become the new “it spot” for dining and entertainment in North County.”

Del Mar Highlands Town Center’s new line-up of restaurants will include:

  • Burlap: Top Chef alum Brian Malarkey and James Brennan open their second restaurant on the heels of the successful Searsucker. The menu will feature “Asian Cowboy” cuisine, a blend of meats and seafoods with bold Asian flavors.
  • Mia Francesca and Davanti Enoteca: Famed Chicago restaurant owner and chef, Scott Harris, (named Restaurateur of the Year by the Chicago Tribune) brings his talents to the town center. The two restaurants will open in separate locations in Del Mar Highlands and will offer differing dining experiences. Mia Francesca will serve classic Italian entrees made from locally sourced ingredients in an intimate dining room setting, while Davanti Enoteca wine bar will offer fresh tapas and wine pairings and a more casual, conversational setting.
  • Rimel"s Rotisserie: The beloved locals favorite is opening its third restaurant and will continue serving the locally sourced meats, sustainable seafood and local produce that Rimel’s is known for, in an elegant casual setting.
  • Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza: Having held its prized place at the center for a number of years, Sammy’s is considered to be the cornerstone of Del Mar Highlands. The restaurant is currently undergoing a renovation and expansion, making way for a large outdoor patio that overlooks the entire town center and the new entertainment plaza below, and upon re-opening, this Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza location will be the first location in California to have a full bar and cocktail menu.
  • Taverna Blue: The proprietor who launched Daphne’s Greek Café will open his first one-off restaurant featuring an affordable menu of fresh Mediterranean food and Greek classics infused with American cuisine. Set to be a casual and upbeat neighborhood eatery, diners can enjoy their meal in Taverna Blue’s dining room, or engage in conversation over beer and wine at the sparkling blue granite bar.
  • The Counter: With a fun “Build Your Own Burger” concept, The Counter offers over 300,000 possible combinations of proteins, cheeses, toppings, sauces and buns. The burgers pair well with specialty drinks and adult milkshakes; full-service or fast-casual dining options are available.
  • Urban Plate: A casual dine-in or take-out with an open kitchen concept, Urban Plates will feature hand carved meats, poultry, seafoods and high-quality soups, salads. Bread and desserts will be baked fresh daily on-site.
  • Champagne French Bakery Cafe: Holding its prized place in the town center, the popular bakery will continue to serve a variety of French dishes and baked goods serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and of course, dessert.

For families and moviegoers, the new and improved movie theatre is also not to be missed:

  • Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas: The former UltraStar 8 will open as a boutique theatre with luxury and comfort in mind. Eight auditoriums with state-of-the-art and 3D technologies and high-back reclining chairs will welcome guests with perks such as HD movie screening previews, reserved seating options, a full bar, in-seat food ordering and gourmet and classic movie fare.

“Based on the feedback and community support that we’ve already received, we know that these changes and this re-imagined town center are just what the Del Mar and Carmel Valley areas needed,” says Schreiber. “Del Mar Highlands has something for everyone and we’re really looking forward to sharing the center with all who visit.”

The restaurants and movie theatre will open throughout the months of July and August. Del Mar Highlands Town Center will host a center-wide grand opening celebration in early September.
